“Good artists copy but great artists steal.”
Picasso said that (or did he?). But he didn’t mean you should steal other artist’s work, that is a big no no. What he meant was that in order to produce great art you must first learn about, absorb and be inspired by it. Every great artist is influenced by others. I also get inspiration from great artists and designers. Want to know some of those guys? Georges Braque was a French painter best known for his cubist period. Very recently Jackson Pollock was one of the most important post-war american painters. Way earlier that that Leonardo Da Vinci, a true genius, was one of the most prolific artists of all time. Design wise you should definitely start by checking the work of Paul Rand, Saul Bass, Dieter Rams, Massimo Vignelli, David Carson and Frank Lloyd Wright. This list could go on forever but don’t miss on Paula Scher, Chip Kidd, Banksy and everything related to the Bauhaus School of Fine Arts. These are, of course, the top masters of their craft. You can find thousands of talented designers at sites like Bēhance and Dribble. And remember, always be knowling!
